The best-paced first Tibet itinerary, built around altitude acclimatization: two low-key Lhasa city days, a day trip to sacred Yamdrok Lake, and Namtso over the Nagenla Pass — with Tibet Travel Permit processing and oxygen-enriched hotels included.

A slow-paced 7-day route designed for first-time Tibet travelers: rest and acclimatize at 3,650 m on arrival day; Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple and the Barkhor kora on day 2; monk debates at Sera Monastery and Norbulingka on day 3; a day trip over Kamba La Pass (4,998 m) to the sacred Yamdrok Lake on day 4; Namtso over the 5,190 m Nagenla Pass on day 5 — a heavenly-blue lake beneath the Nyenchen Tanglha snow peaks; Drepung Monastery, incense making and a thangka-painter family visit on day 6; airport transfer on day 7.

Oxygen-enriched hotels, a Tibetan private guide, Tibet Travel Permit processing and on-board oxygen are included throughout; pricing reflects permit and transport costs in Tibet. Best suited to travelers in good health who want one quiet week inside the daily rhythm of Himalayan faith.

Day-by-day itinerary每日行程

  1. D1Arrive in Lhasa · Acclimatization Day

Private transfer to your oxygen-enriched hotel. Today is for resting and adjusting to the altitude (3,650 m): take it slow, drink plenty of water, avoid very hot showers and alcohol. If you feel well by late afternoon, stroll the outer Barkhor with your Tibetan guide — watch elderly pilgrims spinning prayer wheels and prostrating pilgrims, and try butter tea with highland barley bread. Practical tips: no strenuous activity in your first 24 hours at altitude; keep a portable oxygen bottle at hand (refills at the front desk); a light Tibetan noodle dinner and an early night are recommended. Overnight: Lhasa.

  2. D2Potala Palace · Jokhang Temple · Barkhor Street

Morning at the Potala Palace (reservation included): climb the centuries-old zigzag stairs from the White Palace to the Red Palace, taking in the stupas and murals — about 3 hours in total; photography is not allowed inside the chapels. Afternoon at Jokhang Temple, where butter lamps burn eternal before the life-sized Jowo Shakyamuni statue brought by Princess Wencheng; the golden-roof platform looks out over the whole Barkhor. At dusk, join the clockwise kora around the Barkhor (about 1 hour), walking with the pilgrims. Dinner: Tibetan hotpot or noodle in a sweet-tea house. Practical tips: the Potala uses timed-entry slots — your ticket is secured in advance; climb slowly to ease any breathlessness. Overnight: Lhasa.

  3. D3Sera Monastery · Norbulingka

Afternoon monk debates at Sera Monastery (usually Mon–Sat from 15:00, subject to the day's schedule): in the courtyard monks clap their palms to pose challenges and snap their beads to answer — rapid-fire exchanges of wit, and the most vivid classroom in Lhasa; then visit the Hayagriva chapel and the kora path behind the hill. Lunch: Tibetan momos (yak beef) and yogurt. In the morning, Norbulingka — the summer palace of the Dalai Lamas: the Kelsang Potrang and the lake-palace gardens are Lhasa's answer to the Summer Palace; rest on the lawns where Tibetan families picnic, and end the day at Zongjiao Lukang park for the Potala's reflection at dusk. Overnight: Lhasa.

  4. D4Yamdrok Lake Day Trip

After breakfast, drive up over Kamba La Pass (4,998 m): Yamdrok Lake spreads out below the pass — water in impossibly layered shades of blue, like a sapphire ribbon coiled between the mountains. Pause about 1 hour at the viewpoint, then descend to the lakeshore villages and waterbirds for unhurried photos. Lakeside lunch, then return to Lhasa the same way (about 5–6 hours driving in total). Practical tips: it is windy and cold at the pass — bring a down jacket and hat; the day involves big altitude swings, so take it easy and keep drinking water; oxygen saturation is monitored throughout. Overnight: Lhasa.

  5. D5Namtso Lake Day Trip

Early start north on the Qinghai–Tibet highway (about 4 hours): pass the Nyenchen Tanglha viewpoint and the Nagenla Pass (5,190 m — the highest point of the trip, photo stop limited to 20 minutes) — and there lies Namtso at the foot of the pass: prayer flags and mani stone cairns on Tashi Peninsula snapping in the wind beneath snow peaks. Walk the peninsula boardwalk slowly for about 2 hours; simple lunch by the lake. Return to Lhasa by early evening. Practical tips: Namtso sits at 4,718 m — today is the toughest day of the trip, so sleep early the night before; from November to April the road may close for ice, in which case the day switches to Yangbajing geothermal or the northern-grassland route (your guide confirms before departure). Overnight: Lhasa.

  6. D6Drepung Monastery · Incense & Thangka Experience

Morning at Drepung Monastery, the largest Gelug monastery: its white buildings spread up the hillside like a giant heap of rice; the Main Assembly Hall and Ganden Potrang deserve an unhurried 2.5 hours. Afternoon is a crafts day: learn to roll a stick of Tibetan incense at a workshop (cypress wood plus some thirty medicinal herbs), then visit a thangka-painter family to watch mineral and plant pigments ground and outlines drawn — you may even ask the master to add a stroke to your practice piece. Farewell Tibetan banquet for dinner — yak beef, highland barley wine and tsampa. Practical tips: photography is mostly forbidden inside chapels; the thangka session takes about 2 hours and you take your piece home. Overnight: Lhasa.

  7. D7Departure Transfer

Private transfer to Lhasa Gonggar Airport (about 70 minutes) or Lhasa railway station (about 25 minutes) according to your flight or train; arrive 3 hours early for international flights, 2 hours for trains. The airport road follows the Lhasa valley — a last look at the river and barley fields. If time allows, finish with a quiet sit in a downtown sweet-tea house. Practical tips: avoid strenuous activity before leaving Tibet so altitude symptoms don't flare; good souvenirs include Tibetan incense, small thangkas, yak jerky and turquoise pieces; carry your original Tibet Travel Permit for border checks. Overnight: none (departure evening).
