Starting from Shanghai, experience the waterfront nightscape of Wuzhen's West Scenic Zone and stroll through Xitang's Covered Corridors on this four-day journey through the most classic water towns of Jiangnan.

'Above there is heaven, below there are Suzhou and Hangzhou,' yet the essence of Jiangnan's water towns lies in the riverside homes of Wuzhen and Xitang. On day one, explore Yu Garden's classical Jiangnan landscape and the Bund's international architecture. On day two, drive two hours to Wuzhen, focusing on the West Scenic Zone—from the indigo dyeing workshops by day to the night cruise and floating market after dark, offering the ultimate waterfront nightscape experience.

On the morning of day three, discover the authentic East Scenic Zone with its local residents' way of life, then transfer to Xitang to walk its 1,300-meter Covered Corridors and cruise under stone bridges before returning to Shanghai in the evening. The final day includes free time before airport transfer. This package includes 3 nights in carefully selected hotels (2 in Shanghai + 1 in Wuzhen), private car transfers throughout, and all entrance fees for the West Scenic Zone night tour and boat rides—perfect for a first Jiangnan trip that balances city and古镇 (ancient town).

Day-by-day itinerary每日行程

  1. D1Arrive in Shanghai · The Bund & Yu Garden

After private airport transfer, check into your downtown Shanghai hotel. In the afternoon, visit Yu Garden: this Ming Dynasty-era Jiangnan garden is famous for its changing scenery at every step, with the Nine Zigzag Bridge and Mid-Lake Pavilion Teahouse as classic photo spots. Right outside the garden is the City God Temple commercial area, where you can taste a basket of Nanxiang Xiaolongbao (soup dumplings). In the evening, head to the Bund to admire the historic international architecture along the Huangpu River and the illuminated Lujiazui skyline. Travel Tips: For Yu Garden during peak season, it's recommended to book online 1-2 days in advance. The Bund's nightly lights are typically on from 19:00-22:00 on weekdays. Dinner recommendation: Shanghai local cuisine (braised pork belly, fresh pork and bamboo shoot stew).

  2. D2Shanghai → Wuzhen West Scenic Zone · Water Town Night Tour

After breakfast, drive approximately 2 hours to Wuzhen. After lunch, focus on exploring the West Scenic Zone: see the blue cloth-drying grounds at Muben Color Dye Workshop, visit Zhaoming Academy, and Bai Lian Pagoda, strolling along the waterside wooden walkways at a leisurely pace. After sunset, take a traditional gondola boat for a night tour: lights reflect on the water as floating markets and light shows create the ultimate Jiangnan nightscape. Stay overnight at a hotel within or near the Wuzhen scenic area. Travel Tips: The West Scenic Zone ticket allows one-time entry and exit; plan your route back to the hotel accordingly. During peak season, expect to wait 30-60 minutes for the night cruise. The stone-paved paths near the water can be slippery at night—non-slip shoes are recommended.

  3. D3Wuzhen East Scenic Zone → Xitang → Return to Shanghai

In the morning, visit Wuzhen's East Scenic Zone: compared to the West's theatrical night atmosphere, the East retains more of the original residents' lifestyle—see Hongyuan Tai Dye Workshop, Mao Dun's Former Residence, and the Shadow Puppet Museum, taking about 2.5 hours to explore. After lunch, drive approximately 1 hour to Xitang: wander along the Covered Corridors, pass through Shipi Alley, take a gondola boat through Huanxiu Bridge, and watch the sunset on the white walls and dark tiles. Return to Shanghai in the evening. Travel Tips: Xitang can be crowded on weekends and holidays; it's recommended to take the gondola boat before 16:00. The stone bridges in the ancient town have many steps—strollers and luggage will need to be carried. Dinner can be enjoyed on Nanjing Road or in Xintiandi.

  4. D4Free Time in Shanghai · Airport Transfer

Morning at leisure: enjoy a local breakfast in the alleyways (rice cakes with soy milk) near your hotel, or take a citywalk through Wukang Road or Tianzifang's plane tree-lined neighborhoods, purchasing souvenirs like White Rabbit milk candy or snow cream. Check out from your hotel at noon. Transfer to Pudong or Hongqiao Airport/high-speed rail station (45-70 minutes from downtown) according to your flight/train schedule. Travel Tips: It's recommended to depart 3 hours before your flight, as security lines can be long at Pudong Airport during peak hours. If you need a late check-out, please inform your guide one day in advance.
